If I could have a time capsule and go back to any decade, there is no doubt in my mind it would be the 1950’s. Can we say, fabulous fashion? If you know anything about fashion, you know that trends come and go. However, if you really appreciate fashion, you also realize that there are certain trends that never go out of style—they remain simply timeless. The 50’s represent some of the most classic looks, worn by famous fashion icons. Let’s look through some of these icons and appreciate the trends will forever remain!
Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. If you have not seen this movie to see Audrey in her iconic black dress, look no further than below. Audrey proves that a black dress can be worn alone…or better yet spiced up with fabulous diamonds. Some of the best fashion advice I’ve ever read to get the most out of your clothes is to buy a piece that you know you can wear in three entirely different looks. A black dress proves to fit this advice. Pair with a colored jacket for work, spice it up with a statement necklace for a fun night out, or match with leggings and a sweater for a casual look. No one does it better than Audrey though. Doesn’t she look fabulous?
Elizabeth Taylor: If you aren’t familiar with her, you’ll find that she was the queen of diamonds, was claimed to have Violet eyes, and had an unbelievable shape. Elizabeth appreciated fashion and below you’ll see some incredible outfits. Notice how she accentuates her shape? She found a neckline that works for her to show off her bust. What is interesting about 50’s fashion, was that although clothes weren’t too revealing, these fashion icons still found a way to look sexy.
Sophia Loren: This name may be the most unknown out of this particular group, but should certainly not be dismissed. You may think Marilyn Monroe when thinking about the term ‘sex appeal’ in the 50’s, but Sophia Loren equally fits the bill. Can we say va-va-voom? Being the makeup junkie I am, I also really appreciate the vixen eyeliner she rocks. How can you not want to try this look after seeing her eyes?
Marilyn Monroe is considered one of the most famous women of the 50’s. Marilyn flaunted her sex appeal yet interestingly enough, she lacked confidence and struggled with accepting herself. Dying at a very young age, Marilyn left us too early. Let’s appreciate her and the trends she left us with, which include high waistlines, fitted pieces, and low necklines. Some of her most famous shots are provided below.
Re-cap: What can the 1950’s teach you?
- A black dress is versatile enough to be worn to nearly any occasion, yet remain the most sophisticated of all looks
- A tailored fit is most important—Pay attention to detail and spend more on a quality fit
- Eyeliner—it’s a great way to spice up your look with all the different ways you can wear it. Try a smokey eye or a cat eye for a few different looks
- Accentuate your assets—learn your shape and find what looks best on you. You don’t have to be revealing to be sexy! Find your best fit and you’ll be more confident in your looks.
Until next time…
